The Drakuls have found the Solar System. A merciless race, there is nothing left once the Drakuls have conquered a civilization except the bones of its dead. When the first Drakul exploratory ship emerged from the stargate, Earth’s days became numbered. Although LCDR Shawn ‘Calvin’ Hobbs and the crew of the TSS Vella Gulf came back with a battleship from their last mission, it won’t be enough to defend the Solar System from the Drakul menace. The Mrowry and the Terran artificial intelligences have run the numbers...and Terra has come up wanting. The crew of the Vella Gulf knows what a Drakul invasion means the end of civilization as we know it. Can they find a way to stop the devastating onslaught of the Drakul fleet? Even their new allies, the Mrowry, think Earth’s salvation is unlikely. The Earth has more enemies than it can count and no prospect of aid. In the face of extinction, Terra Stands Alone!

Terra Stands Alone The Theogony Volume 3 Chris Kennedy 9780990333531 Books

As I read through this series and the subsequent series, I was struck by how alike every book was. Each book has the hero LCDR Hobbs and his friends on the Vella Gulf heading out to meet a new race and defeat them in a desperate battle that will somehow including boarding actions in space.

Each one does a fairly impressive job of building up tension and slowly increasing the pressure on humanity.

But..

That's the problem, in order to keep increasing the tension and pressure when the stories are so formulaic, the warriors fighting for LCDR Hobbs must die in droves. There has to be a confused and chaotic boarding action in space that makes little sense, but somehow is pivotal to deciding the outcome of a great space battle that might not be in the same system.

This was only the third of the six books in this 3 trilogy combination, but by this time I had noticed the problems. I just ignored them originally because at the time I was enjoying the action scenes. Later, and especially after reading the sixth book to conclusion I suddenly felt disgust that I had allowed myself to be swept up in the empty action and had not seen just how much these books copied from each other.

They are fun, but there is no reason to read all of them. Each one is pretty much the same. The way Chris hides that is in the huge casualty count. So many named characters get killed each book that he has to introduce new ones and that hides how little variation there is in the plot

Terra Stands Alone The Theogony Volume 3 Chris Kennedy 9780990333531 Books Reviews

This was a good book.

Yes, I understand that I just described it as "good".... but that's a value that meets a lot of varied criteria. Excellent characterization, logical world building, consistent plot and features, and so much more. But the main element to my "good" is that I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the time I spent in his Theogony world. I enjoyed the character's interaction, their demonstrated values, and all the rest that combines into a "world", or in Mr. Kennedy's case, a universe. It was very entertaining, and, even more important, I shall continue to buy all of Mr. Kennedy's books... for as long as he writes them.
I like this series. Its has good characters and good story plots. Pacing is good and the action is frequent. It perhaps has too many very convenient things happen at very convenient times, but not wholly unexpected in sci-fi. A hodgepodge of sci-fi, mythology and fantasy that somehow hangs together in a mostly coherent plot. Sure it has holes and much deus ex machina going on, but in the end it was a good fun read. Write faster, I want to know what the elves want or offer..
I managed to finish reading this book, but barely (I only give one star to books that I am unable to finish). It has a few sparks here and there that, if developed could make for a nice story, e.g., a mixture of various alien races with interesting features and idiosyncrasies. However, the writing is rather sloppy with numerous inconsistencies in the storyline that detract from the reading, and more important characters that are never fully developed. Maybe this is because this is the third book in the series (I kept struggling trying to figure out why the supposedly main character was the main character - he plays no particular role in the book), but it extends to pretty much all characters that are introduced and then killed in ways that seem mostly orthogonal to the main storyline or simply dropped from it altogether.
The best way to describe the impression this book left me with, is that it comes across as "cartoonish" but unfortunately without the drawings that can often made simple-minded cartoons fun to read.
The book ends with the typical teaser that is supposed to entice the reader to buy the next installment in the series, but it was itself so opaque and disconnected from everything else that it only comforted the decision I had already made, namely, stay away....
This review will be for all three of The Theogony Trilogy. The first book of the series, Janissaries, begins as most first books do, establishing characters and setting the scene. Unfortunately this takes the first half of the book which feels like a chore to read. Also due to the large number of characters it is very difficult to connect with any of them. The second book, When the Gods Aren't Gods, is the weakest of the trilogy as it takes a turn from sci-fi to sci-fantasy. The final book, Terra Stands Alone, is the best of the series with lots of action and a thrilling conclusion. Overall the characters are so numerous that most, particularly the human characters, feel underdeveloped. The story is also very flat with the actions taken by the characters not making much sense, for instance the amount of trust the humans give the aliens after they first reveal themselves. I believe this is because this series is setting the scene for the following series. This is not the best scf-fi/fantasy series I have read but neither is it the worst. If you like other Chris Kennedy novels you'll probably like The Theogony Trilogy. Note There is a prequel series that follows the events of a Sino-America war, which is referenced in The Theogony Trilogy multiple time which you may want to read first, although it is not necessary.
I am really torn on how to review this book. It is a very good space opera. but not a very good hard SCI-FI book. Mt Kennedy is not a writer on a par with Azimov or Clarke or even Norton. That said, he writes a very good story.

My problems with his books are the same as in the last 2 books. All the ET races are from human mythology, and either very good or very evil. Also, why would you take a black hole to the surface of a world instead of just launching it in a missile. Oh yeah, Black holes DO NOT create more gravity. Gravity is created by mass. A Black Hole concentrates mass, but does not create any more material. Physics just does not allow that.

That said, Mr. Kennedy's battle scenes are very good. I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would.
